Seemingly a quite short lived venture, there is some confusion over premises, but the Newmarket Journal of 14th November 1903 reported the
opening of the new Liberal Club on 14th November 1903 in premises on Exning Road, a few yards from St.Mary's Square previously occupied
by Messrs Harper and Co. and refers to a 2 storey building. This could well have been Harpers the butcher,
directly opposite the entrance to the New Cut (later to be Murton, butchers). Initially there were no alcoholic refreshments, which was
to be considered anew at the 1st annual meeting, it was however teetotal in 1909.
The Club moved to its new premises in the New Cut on 26th August 1909 . This was a new purpose built premises on a site situated between
the New Cut and Church Lane, purchased from the Star Brewery of Cambridge. A small building, construction only started in the first week
of June 1909.
During the General Election of January 1910 in a riot outside the premises, windows were broken and the billiard room vandalised.
In 1919 the premises were taken over by the Comrades of the Great War
In 1933 the premises were taken over by Chester's the High Street tailors as a storeroom. It was then over by the Salvation Army in 1937,
and now (2023) demolished and rebuilt, very much in the same style, as two storey residential use.
There is actually no positive evidence that it was licensed premises for much of its existence. In view of the prevalence of temperance
organisations at the time, especially amongst Liberal ladies, it is probably unlikely,
certainly in its earlier days, but there is a record in the licensing archives of a license in 1917
