A lot of Newmarket history went when the remains of the palace were demolished and this building and the adjacent Toy Store were built in the 1830s.
During WW2 the premises were used for a wartime operations centre. After the war, they were purchased by the Marlborough Club, whose premises on the High Street were destroyed by bombing on 18th February 1941. In 2012 Marlborough Club Ltd was incorporated and trades as King's Restaurant and in 2016 planning permission was granted to convert much of the building into up to 26 letting bedrooms.
