HAND & SWORD

Location:- west corner of what is currently (2023) the Market Street- High Street junction

Brewery or Owner:-unknown

Only record seen was Cambridge Records Office in a will dated 1703. Since then Rachel Wood has found a bit more, which made it that the Hand and Sword was on the west side of what is now Market Street
Dr.Wood found documents from 1684 referring to William Coe enclosing part of the land on which had stood the Hand in Sword. From the Maid's Head, occupied by Walter Poulter (later the Carlton), going east was first the messuage of William Coe and then waste land where had stood the Hand in Sword before being destroyed by fire.

It looks as is what is now (2023)W.H.Smith was the Maid's Head, then William Coe's messuage covering Scrivens, Vodaphone, EE, Market Street and possibly Rocking Rabbit. The space that became Market Street was not built on then. It is most probable that the lane into the Market in those days was between the Bull, and the Christopher (what was until 2023 Barclays Bank.)

That at least confirms the existence of the Hand and Sword (probably also known at some time as The Sword) prior to 1684.
