GOLDEN LION

Location:- High Street, north side

Going back at least as far as 1787. That part of the High Street for some reason was not as popular with photographers. That makes it harder to see what changes have been made over the years. There does seem to have been quite a change in the 1920/30s.

the Golden Lion now trades under the J.D.Wetherspoon banner. Prior to Wetherspoon's take over the premises had gone through a bad patch Discos, karaoke, a night club at the rear, various refurbishments seem only to have attracted the wrong element. Fights in the High Street adjacent to the premises were frequent, but not always attributable to the Golden Lion. In 1990 plans were actually submitted to convert the frontage into two shops and have three storey offices at the rear. In the event a night club started at the rear (various identities), which seems to have avoided a rebuild and Wetherspoons took it on in 2001 which calmed things down. It is now, 2023, one of only four pubs/hotels open along the whole of the High Street.
