GEORGE

Location:- as yet not identified

Only record seen so far is mention of a theft from the George Inn before the fire of 1683 in Peter May's book "Changing face of Newmarket 1600-1760". This is possibly the theft recorded in the London Gazette ",...before the fire, from the "George Inn", in Newmarket, a flea bitten grey pad nag with a bob tail, about 13 hands and a half high, eight years old."

Although its exact location is unknown, it was seemingly on the St Mary's side of the High Street, since an eyewitness to the fire in 1683 includes the George as one of the inns destroyed by the fire.
