CROWN

Location:- High Street, north side

1901..............................2019

The Crown is amongst the oldest hostelries in Newmarket, dating back to at least 1577. We are not 100% certain if it is on the same site, but the Crown was bequeathed in 1604 by Thomas Dane to Christopher Funston (senr) who handed it on to his son Christopher (died in 1617) before his father who died n 1625).

One snag with the Bloss family is their common use of Frederick or Francis are given names, lus the many Bloss families in the area. In 1892 Annie Bloss replaced the old wooden weigh bridge and advertised that she would weigh up to 5 ton, to within 7 pounds. Annie or properly, Anna, was born in Prague and married Alfred Bloss. At some time he was a publican, but 2 census are missing. Anna seems to have taken the Crown after his death in 1876.

Since 1969 reduced considerably in area. As late as the 1960's is was used by many bus firms as a convenient stopping place between Norwich and London and the yard, with possibility of a "drive through" was often full with buses.,

For over a year in 1976-1977 the property was closed and boarrded up, waiting for a new owner to come along and renovate it. Newmarket man Desmond Drummnd had plans to improve it but they fell though. The hotel had been on the market since early 1977 at £35,000

Ceased to operate as a pub in 2009. Now (2023) trading as a Thai restaurant with accommodation (Crown Rooms) above.
