The RAILWAY INN, in New Town, on what was then known as Railway Street is recorded as such in the census of 1861 and 1871. All other
records show it as The Carpenters Arms. firstly on Station Street, the street became Lower Station Road, and later still, All Saints Road.
In an advert in the
Cambridge independent Press on 25th April 1857, one Thomas Hatchard say he has "entered and taken on The Carpenters Arms & Railway Inn,
Newmarket, where he intends to carry on his usual calling of auctioneer, land agent and surveyor, appraiser and general commission agent
(he was also an agent for a manure company)
Initial licence granted 2nd September 1851, sold unlicensed on 27th January 2009 One interesting publican was Herbert George Southey (Tiny), who was also still a jockey and after leaving the pub, in 1913 rode the winner of the Cambridgeshire |
