BUSHEL

Location:- Rookery, corner of Drapers Row and Market Street

Brewery or Owner:-- Greene,King

Traditionally regarded as the oldest inn in Newmarket, although probably a close run thing with the Horseshoes. Since the fire of 1683 destroyed practically all on the St.Mary's side of the High Street, were the Bushel there then the current building must be a re-build. On the otherhand the Horseshoes and Black Horse, had they been in existence, would have survived, since the All Saints side of town was untouched. Reputedly has the remains of a cock fighting pit in the cellar. Central in the Rookery area, more correctly the Dukeries, an area built for the nobility to stay when racing in Newmarket. The Rookery was actually to the right of the building, on a line from the Bull to New Astley Club. It is the sole survivor of the 22 hostelries listed in this area in 1757. Original address was Drapery Row, at the junction of Market Street and Eagle Lane..
