Very little documentation has been found. Apparently instituted in 1923. Reported at one time as using an "old shack", off Exning Road,
then a small building in King Edward Road.
The foundation stone of the present premises, adjacent to the then White Lodge Workhouse, was laid by Lt.Col. A.H.Catchpole on 12th November 1927. An article in the Bury Free Press in March 1933 stated that at the AGM that year, the 10th year of the club, the profits had reached £172 0s 11d, which was considered satisfactory and had enable £100 to be paid off the mortgage, leaving just £300 outstanding. In late 1949 a new lounge and additional entrance and new toilets were added on the town side of the club. The seperate entrance was of course in order that ladies could enter the lounge without intruding in the main club area. One tf the strange customs in those days, ladies not allowed near the bar, and yet as often as not there was a barmaid behind the members bar! In March 1956, a larger concert hall was added to the Club. |
